Disadvantages of Getting Cover-Up Tattoos

It’s amazing to think, as many as 45 million Americans have tattoos.  But what’s even more amazing, nearly 17 percent of these tattooed individuals eventually want to remove a tattoo.

It seems the impulsive urge to get tattoos is also responsible for 100,000 “tattoo undos” annually.  Either way you look at it, there is a lot of tattoo ink going down… via new tattoos being inked or old tattoos getting re-inked with tattoo cover-ups.

Ironically, the alternative tattoo removal method in such high demand, doesn’t involve removing tattoos at all.  Cover up tattoos; remove tattoos in a sense by replacing old unwanted images with fresh overlay tattoo designs.  And although cover-ups are very popular ways to clear the body’s canvas of unwanted tattoos, they also come at a price.

The Cons Tattoo Cover-Ups
You know the saying “size doesn’t matter?”  Well, with tattoo cover ups size does matter; in fact it matters a lot.

In order to completely hide underlying ink, the size of cover-up tattoos must be larger than the size of existing tattoos. Having to adhere to certain size criteria can create challenges and limitations for the tattooing artist.

Getting a cover-up tattoo

Cover Ups Tattoo Removal Method

Cover-up tattoos are considered a tattoo removal method even though no actual tattoo removal takes place.  Cover up tattoos do just that, they cover up existing tattoos.

Basically, cover-up tattoos are new tattoos specifically designed to tattoo directly over existing artwork, to completely hide or revamp old tattoos. Cover up tattoos are used for a variety of reasons, from disguising gang tattoos to adding color and details to basic tattoos creating more interesting designs.

In order to get a good cover-up tattoo, the tattoo artist must be a talented professional artist experienced at rework ink.  The goal of tattooing cover designs over tattoos is to disguise old tattoos, without making it obvious the new tattoo is intentionally hiding old ink.

During the process of getting cover up ink, the artist uses a variety of techniques, such as a “heavy inking” a method of working extra pigment into the skin to ensure new ink completely removes the appearance of the design underneath.

An important fact to note when considering a cover–up as a method of tattoo removal, getting a cover up tattoo is a permanent decision.  The extra work a tattoo artists puts into making a cover up tattoo successful also makes the new tattoo permanent ink that is nearly impossible to remove.

So, when choosing to erase unwanted body art with cover-up tattoos rather than alternative tattoo removal methods, remember to pick a tattoo design that you truly like looking at, and plan to like seeing for a long time.
