Tattoo Fading Leads to Removal

Tattoos are a trend that have certainly gotten under a lot of people’s skin.  Especially, for those people that have witness some tattoo fading occurring with age.

While tattoos are not like bad haircuts that eventually grow out, tattoos also do not remain permanently the same forever.

Tattoos fade with age, this is apparently something many people are realizing after the fact, evidence of the rising number of tattoo removal being performed.

According to the American Society of Dermatological Surgery, in 2001, 44,760 tattoo removal procedures were reportedly performed in the U.S.  In 2003, that number increased significantly to 61,772 tattoo removal procedures. And data is currently being reviewed for 2007.

The fact of the matter is as people age, their skin ages too, and naturally tattoos fade and age with the skin.  So, if people want their tattoos to look good for as long as possible, they have to take care of their skin and at the same time their tattoo.

Most common reasons for tattoos fading are:

1. Excessive sun exposure

2. Failure to properly care for tattoo during healing process

3. Amateur tattoos or tattoo artist did not apply the pigment correctly using a steady hand

The most common reason for fading colors is ultraviolet light, especially sunlight.

Excessive amounts of sun will fade tattoos at the same rate it causes skin damage.  To protect against damage and fading it’s important to wear daily SPF and limit time in direct sun.

Adopt the habit of good skin care and daily sunscreen to protect today’s tattoo from regretting tomorrow’s fading, and the hassles of tattoo removal.
