Removing Your Own Tattoo

DIY, a.k.a do-it-yourself tattoo removal is rising to the top of the ranks by popular demand.  It seems the decision to remove tattoos is a personal decision that many people are giving far more consideration than getting tattoos.

Don’t be fooled into thinking DIY tattoo removal methods are easy, overnight removal miracles.  Removing a tattoo is a process that takes time, whether the method is laser, dermabrasion, or at home do-it-yourself tattoo removal.

Fact is, one tattoo removal treatment with laser cost on average $150 and up; and tattoos are not removed in a single laser session.  Removing tattoos with lasers requires numerous laser treatments (the number of treatments is always unknown) scheduled months apart, which amounts to the cost of laser removal really adding up.  And along with the painful expense of laser tattoo removal, also comes the pure pain of the experience itself.

Millions of tattooed people are searching for ways to get rid of tattoos they want to remove.   And it seems, more and more DIY tattoo removal methods are being discovered each year, with more people looking for ways to remove their own tattoos.

One of the many benefits of do-it-yourself tattoo removal is that it is very inexpensive compared to laser tattoo removal and other types of surgical tattoo removal procedures.

Other reasons people look for effective DIY tattoo removal are the issues of privacy, and to avoid paying for expensive, painful procedures that run the risk of resulting in scars.

Determining if DIY tattoo removal is for you, is just one more decision tied to tattoos that “you” must decide for yourself.  Lifestyle, finances, and potential risks are all very personal choices specific to you and how you choose to remove your own tattoo.

Erase, Remove, Undo Tattoo Fade Creams

Today, there are many tattoo removal methods available, including in home tattoo removal options.

Referred to as tattoo removal creams, erase creams, fade away or fading creams it seems regardless of the term used these tattoo fade creams are one of the most controversial tattoo removal methods.

Generally, tattoo fade creams involve a series of topical lotions, creams, or solutions that are applied on the skin with the unwanted tattoo to make it disappear.

Tattoo fade creams often contain skin lighteners and exfoliating agents to fade tattoo ink from the skin’s surface.  With repeated applications of the tattoo fading creams, tattoos gradually lighten as the body’s natural cellular turnover process speeds up.

Overtime the application of tattoo fading creams disturbs the underlying skin cells containing tattoo ink pigments.  As these ink cells are disturbed, they break apart into smaller particles.  Then these small ink particles start to rise up to the skin’s surface, lighten and shed away fading the appearance of the unwanted tattoo.

Tattoo removal is not an overnight process, and in-home tattoo fade creams require diligent use. However, tattoo fade away methods are perhaps the least painful, and inexpensive means of removing an unwanted tattoo.

When using a tattoo fade cream, it is more about trial and error, consistent use, and patience than immediate results.  Tattoo fade creams are relatively inexpensive, at home methods of removing unwanted tattoos with limited risks compared to other tattoo removal techniques.

Tattoo Removal Methods include Surgery

When considering tattoo removal methods, the most important question relates to if the removal technique will leave behind a scar.  There are few if any surgeries that can be performed without traces of a scar.

The degree of damage post surgical tattoo removal depends on the size and complexity of the tattoo, and to what extent the surgeon must go to in order to remove it.

Medical Tattoo Removal Options:

Cryosurgery is a freezing technique used to pre-treat tattoo skin area before performing dermabrasion or salabrasion tattoo removal in order to minimize the amount of bleeding that occurs.

Dermabrasion, is a method of removing or sanding down the top layer of skin with a rapidly spinning abrasive instrument wheel or a wire brush.  The procedure tends to be bloody and is usually done under local IV/oral sedation, and often combined with cryosurgery to minimize bleeding.  Post treatment, skin remains raw and red for several days and may take several months to fully heal.

Salabrasion is an older and less common tattoo removal method of aggressively rubbing the tattoo skin with coarse salt or a salt sanding block. Cryosurgery is often performed prior to treatment to reduce the pain caused by repeated friction.

Excision is a method of tattoo removal that is typically used as a last resort for small tattoos or smaller sections of large tattoos.  Excision is a surgical procedure that involves literally cutting away skin embedded with tattoo ink. After the removing the tattoo, the skin is then pulled together and sewn with sutures, resulting in a scar.  This method is not ideal for larger tattoos, as they often require multiple surgical procedures, and tissue expanders or skin grafts.

Tissue Expansion is a surgical technique necessary to expand the skin in order for to excise large tattoos.  The technique requires a balloon to be placed underneath the skin to the side of the tattoo.  Gradually, over several weeks the balloon is inflated and as it increases in size the skin stretches to accommodate the growth. When the skin has ‘stretched’ enough so that enough remains to pull together and suture once the whole tattoo is cut away.

Physicians specializing in tattoo removal make it appoint to stress the fact there are no guarantees when it comes to tattoo removal and predicting the results.

Here is an informational overview of the latest surgical and non-surgical tattoo removal methods options available to remove tattoos.

Surgical Tattoo Removal Methods:
Cryosurgy
Dermabrasion
Excision
IPL
Laser
Salabrasion
Tissue Expansion

Non-Invasive Tattoo Removal Methods:
Chemical Peels
Cover-Ups
Tattoo Fading Creams
Skin Bleaching/Lightening

Lasers (Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation) tattoo removal have become the most common method of tattoo removal today.

The laser tattoo removal method requires multiple treatment sessions, with several different lasers, as each color ink pigment needs a specific wavelength of laser light beam for successful removal.

Over the past decade, laser technology significantly transformed tattoo removal methods by improving treatment results.  In the past tattoo removal methods were at high risks for causing infections and leaving behind scars.

Traditional tattoo removal methods used prior to the introduction of the newest advancements in laser technology involved aggressive surgical measures with less than desirable outcome results.

Cryosurgery, a medical procedure used to freeze skin was a technique commonly used to pre-treat tattoo area to minimize amount of bleeding while performing Dermabrasion or Salabrasion methods of tattoo removal.

In addition to dermabrasion, which involved tattoo removal by sanding down the top layer of skin with a rapidly spinning abrasive wire brush instrument and Salabrasion or aggressively rubbing away tattoo skin with a coarse salt sanding block, Excision was the other standard method of tattoo removal.

Excision or surgically cutting the tattoo out of the skin then suturing skin together, another procedure of removal that in a sense trades unwanted tattoo for a scar. Today these three traditional tattoo removal methods are used infrequently as last resorts with latest advancements in tattoo removal available.

In addition to lasers, new advances in tattoo removal feature Tattoo Fade Creams designed to be more affordable, less painful, and more convenient then medical removal procedures.  Tattoo fade creams work in essence by speeding the body’s natural process of cellular turnover, which disrupts dormant skin cells embedded with tattoo ink. Over time repeating this process of fading tattoo ink, lifts and removes the unwanted artwork.

Another method of removing tattoos actually doesn’t remove tattoos at all.  Cover-Up Tattoos are used as a method of hiding an existing tattoo by overlaying the inked skin with a new tattoo design.

While there are more tattoo removal methods available today, the best method of removing a tattoo still remains not having to remove a tattoo in the first place.  People commonly make the mistake of getting a tattoo they later regret, however careful consideration about tattoos will remove the necessity of choosing from the options of tattoo removal methods.
